Portraits Against a White Background

Portraits Against a White Background

Shooting against a white background can be a bit tricky.  How do you get your background bright white while properly exposing your model?

Watch Frank Doorhof explain his process for creating the perfect white background with a simple set-up using Rogue Photography Umbrellas.

First things first, Frank places a piece of transparent plexiglass on top of the white backdrop. This creates a slight reflection and prevents the model from appearing to float in a sea of white.

Then Frank lights the background using two strobes on either side of the model.  Frank uses the Rogue 32" Shoot Thru Umbrella because you can choose if you want to direct the light just on the white background or if you want to direct the umbrella to add some accent light on your model.

Now we need to light the model.  Frank used the Rogue 38" White Umbrella + Diffuser to create a soft, even light on the model.

Watch Frank's video to learn how to properly expose for the background given modern cameras higher dynamic range.  Don't forget to separate the model from the background - Frank explains why.

The results -  A perfectly lit image!
